CITES Academic Technology Services

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

About

Since August 2010 I have been working with CITES Academic Technology Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an eLearning specialist. I am working collaboratively on several projects there, including face-to-face workshops, online resources for instructors, screencast tutorials, mobile learning initiatives, classroom technology assistance, campus blogging platforms, social media programs, and more. Over time I hope to help Illinois faculty develop sound practices for teaching through technology.

Before I began working with CITES, I was the Visiting Coordinator of Instructional Design for WISE Pedagogy, where I helped instructors learn effective practices for teaching online. I created Introduction to Online Pedagogy, which is a free, ongoing workshop based in PBworks with an ongoing discussion component. This has been an exciting new venue for teaching online pedagogy -- in the recent past I have also taught the WISE introductory workshop as a two- or three-week course in Moodle. The wiki-based setting makes this workshop accessible to anyone in the world, at any time of day or year. Instructors, doctoral students, and academic professionals can participate whenever it fits their schedule, without the necessity of a university registration procedure.

Speaking at the WISE Pedagogy Workshop, ALISE 2010

Other WISE Pedagogy initiatives have included a blog, Twitter feed, and our annual face-to-face workshop at the January conferences for ALISE (The Association for Library & Information Science Education).

I began working with the WISE Consortium in March 2007 and have taught Introduction to Online Pedagogy since July 2007. I had my first introduction to online teaching pedagogy in 2003, and taught Professional and Technical Writing courses for the University of Illinois at Springfield, both online and face-to-face, from Fall 2005 to Spring 2007. I have also taught courses in composition, writing about literature, and creative historical fiction. I have a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Illinois at Springfield (2004) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Truman State University (1999), with some post-graduate coursework in online teaching through the Illinois Online Network and Sloan-C.

In my spare time, I am the Vice President for the Champaign-Urbana chapter of an international living history society and I broadcast a weekly world music radio program.

Presentations & Facilitations

Poster presentation at ALA, July 2009

  • "RSS for Teaching, Learning, & Research." This was a presentation for the How-To Tuesday series via CITES Academic Technology Services. The link directs to a Slideshare presentation file.

  • "Overview of Technology Options for Teaching at UIUC." In August 2011 I co-presented with Jamie Nelson for the Graduate Academy at the University of Illinois. Together, we helped new university graduate students learn about educational technologies via CITES Academic Technology Services. The Prezi file linked here was my half of the presentation.

  • Microblogging Learning Team. In May 2011 I co-facilitated with Sam Martin a three-day learning team program that explored microblogging tools such as Twitter and Tumblr for the Faculty Summer Institute at the University of Illinois. The link directs to a wiki that we used to synthesize our efforts and share links to the various tools and resources explored.

  • "Twitter for Teachers." This was a presentation for the How-To Tuesday series via CITES Academic Technology Services. The link directs to a Google Doc that accompanied the workshop.

  • "Creating Dynamic Presentations with Prezi." This presentation, using Prezi format, was created for a hands-on workshop I led for the May 2010 Faculty Summer Institute at the University of Illinois. It provides an overview of Prezi, a few of its possible uses in education, and a step-by-step guide for getting started.

  • WISE Insider Newsletter: Spring 2010. This newsletter includes a report on the 2010 WISE Pedagogy workshop at ALISE, as well as other projects I have coordinated with WISE.

  • WISE Insider Newsletter: Fall 2009. This newsletter includes a short article about my poster presentation at ALA, as well as announcement about the (then) upcoming WISE Pedagogy workshop at ALISE.

  • WISE Insider Newsletter: Spring 2009. This newsletter includes an article on the 2009 WISE Pedagogy workshop at ALISE. The timing for the workshop overlapped Barack Obama's presidential inauguration ceremony, so our plans necessitated some last-minute coordination to accommodate attendees who wished not to miss either. The newsletter features a historically noteworthy photograph of the workshop participants watching live footage together (photograph taken by Richard Urban).

Yes, that's me holding the ADEC Award, pre-haircut.
  • WISE Insider Newsletter: Fall 2008. This newsletter features an article on my and Kathleen Brooks Schisa's acceptance of the ADEC award and presentation on behalf of the WISE Consortium, plus information about WISE Pedagogy workshops.
